Aggressive 6 mo female Chessie Pup
Need advice. My son and his wife have a 6 mo Chessie pup..Baylee who has learned many commands very quickly and is generally a fun loving puppy. However she has an aggressive streak that manifests as biting arms and legs and growling. This has happened twice to my daughter in law. This needs to be remedied immediately. We have only had labs and Newfoundlands before so I cannot advise well. The breeder is on vacation. Where do we go for quick advice? What sparks the attacks are food items she finds outside on walks that she does not want to relinquish. 99% of the time she will drop these items on command in exchange for a treat. Twice she has not. I think she responds aggressively when she knows a person is afraid of her. Advice?
Our chessie is 4 1/2 yrs old now. When he was between 6 mos. and 1 1/2 he decided to fight me for second in command in our house. My husband was the "pack" leader but Gus thought he could take me down and become #2. He would lunge at me, snarl, growl, snap and bark thinking it would bring me into submission but I was not afraid. At that age I could still make him submit with grabbing his collor and hauling him into me with some scary talk and a firm grip. I didn't scream at him or hit him but I tried to treat him like another dog would (minus the biting! ) I held him until he submitted to me and over time he stopped challenging me. He now respects me and I can get him to obey with just looking at him. I think I loved him so much I just wanted it to work out. I got great advice from breeders and owners alike that all said how it was a normal thing and to hang in there. It was well worth it. The best advice I received was to stop thinking of Gus like a person. He's a dog and in nature their packs have certain behaviours to bring everyone in line. Mother dogs grab their pups, hold them down and teach them to behave but they told me to do it while the pup was young enough I could still grab him and wasn't going to lose an arm. Gus is an excellent dog now. It was only a few months out of such a great 4 1/2 years. I hope this helps you some.
Re: Aggressive 6 mo female Chessie Pup
Thank you so much for taking the time to reply. Just as you describe, we had concluded that there is war going on for #2 position in the household. Your advice is very reassuring that this can rectified. It is consistent with our reading. Otherwise the dog seems to have a lovely temperment and we are all very attached to her. It is a distressing thought that this could not be managed.
Would you say that Gus is reliable in his behavior and you would not hesitate to have him around children? Baylee is intended as a family dog. Thanks again for your help.
Re: Aggressive 6 mo female Chessie Pup
Gus has not been raised with children in the home but he is around children all the time and is excellent. We are always careful when he's eating or sleeping & there are small children around because smaller kids don't know the normal boundaries. That said he is rarely sleeping with kids here anyway do to the high play factor! Gus is a family dog first & a hunting partner second & is great at both. He is the smartest dog ie. very quick to learn new things, and he wants to please. He is also quirky, as Chessie's can be, which we find so endearing & very funny. We find him very reliable in his nature but we always remember he is a dog and we watch the little ones too.
