Character Basics
Full name: Andreas Rinould Batzri
Answers to: Professor Batzri
Nationality: British
Age and Birthday: 67, birthday October eleventh.
Wand: Twelve and a half inches, unicorn hair, rowanwood
History:
The son of Lord Landon Batzri and Lady Amelia Pletudine, Andreas was raised in a wealthy but austere environment. Neither Lord nor Lady Batzri were in any way magical, though Landon Batzri's eccentric and unmarried sister Mathilda was quite the witch and attended Hogwarts in her youth. Due to the fond attentions of Mathilda, Andreas grew up not unfamiliar with wizardry (to the well-hidden dismay of his parents). Mathilda's work was paid off when Andreas received a Hogwarts letter at the age of eleven.
He spent the next seven years as a quiet and studious sort, with few friends among the students but very admired among the teachers. Particularly fascinating to Andreas was Defense Against the Dark Arts, taught by a pottering old wizard who could hardly tell a hex from a nursery rhyme. Andreas was (understandably) frustrated by the lack of information in class and so began to delve out on his own, studying creatures, spells, and other things that a wizard ought to stay well away from. After graduation from Hogwarts, the young Andreas went on a trip abroad to seek out everything he could find relating to the Dark Arts and discover the most useful ways of combatting them. With much trial and error (from which he still sports scars) Andreas encountered vampires, werewolves, one or two wizards serving the Dark Lord, and many other creatures of the Dark and (mostly) made it out successfully. (That is, alive.)
On returning home Andreas moved back in to the Batzri manor and holed himself up for two years, writing a book on all of his findings. When the book was finished he sent it to a magical publisher who, delighted with the interesting text, accordingly made it available to the public. Andreas continued to go on research trips and to write, and eventually moved into a small apartment in a very magical area of London where he spent the next twenty years making a name for himself as a noted scholar of Dark Arts defense. On Batzri's sixtieth birthday he received an invitation to teach at Hogwarts School, replacing the batty wizard who had been his own Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. Andreas accepted glady, and has been teaching there ever since.
Important Teacher Questions
Please choose from these what you would like to teach:
Defense Against the Dark Arts
How long have you worked at Hogwarts? Do you have any prior work experience? Batzri has worked at Hogwarts for seven years, before which he spent most of his life researching, experiencing and writing on Dark Arts defense.
In three words or less, tell us your teaching style. (McGonagall, for example, could be "very strict, fair, deeply hidden sense of humor") Interesting, strict, dryly humorous.
Would you like to be a Head of House? If so, which house? (This is based partially on a first-come-first-serve basis, though the quality of your application will matter considerably also.) Not necessarily.
Family
Parents: (names, pure/half/Muggle) Lord Landon and Lady Amelia Pletudine Batzri - both Muggle.
Siblings: (names, ages) None
Other important relationships: Mathilda Batzri (father's sister), a witch who greatly influence him through his childhood.
Appearence
Skin: (color, type, freckles, scars, etc.) Weathered and brown. Scars on his hands and one on his face below his right eye.
Hair: (color, texture, length) Grey, thick and wiry.
Eyes: (color, size, eyelashes, eyebrows) Very observant, wise black eyes overshadowed by heavy eyebrows.
Face: (shape, and anything specific about the shape or size of the character's nose, forehead, chin/jawline, etc. that you want to mention) A large, hawkish nose.
Height: Tall...about 6'4''.
Weight: Um?
Body Type: (muscular, chubby, scrawny, etc.) Lean and muscular.
How do you dress? Plainly - in serviceable black most of the time, like the students.
How do you present yourself? Somewhat standoffish, but very good at what he does.
Personality
Please be very specific. We want to know everything you can tell us, so put a lot of thought into it!
Although he was never an extrovert, Professor Batzri has become more unapproachable in his (relatively) old age. Others generally view him as aloof, even standoffish, and a little bit awe-inspiring. Not a great one for making friends, Batzri nevertheless has the (very great) respect of staff and students alike. He is kind and will take pity on a student who really is clueless or hurt, but will do it in a mostly high-handed manner that isn't very comforting.
What are you like day to day? Aloof, high-handed.
What makes you sad? What are you like when you are sad? As with most emotions, others can rarely tell whether or when Batzri is sad - if he is, it's completely unnoticeable.
What makes you angry? What are you like when you are angry? Andreas' anger is cold - not yelling or rash, but very grim and determined. Batzri isn't someone you want to make angry - the consequences can be painful.
What makes you happy? What are you like when you are happy? "Happiness" is rather a foreign emotion, as is "content" or "joy". When tolerably pleased, Batzri will be more inclined to compliment rather than censure, although even his compliments are dry and grudging.
What are you like when you are hyper, or excited? Hyper??? I don't think he even knows the meaning of the word.
Are you outgoing, shy, somewhere between? Not really either - as a child, Andreas was shy and introverted; as an adult, Andreas is introverted and respected.
Do you make friends easily? The absence of friends should answer that question.
How smart are you? Extremely intelligent, especially when it comes to his field.
How important is it to you to follow the rules? Rules are absolutely, unbreakably, the most important thing.
What makes you different, original, special, unique? His teaching - while students can quake in terror of the teacher himself, his classes are easily a favorite for interestingness and thoroughness.
Anything else you can think of? Yes - I "think" it's time for me to revise the teacher app now, since this is like the 4th time I've hit this question (the other times I deleted it. ).
Likes/Dislikes
What are your hobbies or interests? What do you do in your free time? Batzri has devoted himself to the study of the Dark Arts and the best ways to combat them.
What kind of people do you like to be around? What are the kinds of people you can't stand? Andreas enjoys (although that's rather too strong) the company of quiet thinkers, people who are willing to let silence lie when need be. The sort of people who prattle on about nothing just to break a seemingly awkward pause Batzri will dismiss as immature and in need of poise.
Strengths/Weaknesses
Subjects? (Hopefully you are good at the subject you teach.) Defense Against the Dark Arts, of course - but also Transfiguration, among others.
Talents? Mostly talents of intellect.
Personality Flaws? As have been mentioned - stern, unapproachable, introverted, austere...
Writing Sample
Write a lesson plan for your class, not what happens during class, but a /lesson plan/, and what your thoughts, feelings, and actions are when you first come back to Hogwarts for new term, prior to students' arrival.
~*~
The start of a new schoolyear was a tiring, useless thing, Andreas Batzri thought as he sighed into a seat in front of the office desk. There were few things he liked less than a new class, full of mostly-unteachable students who were merely waiting to get into mischeif in whatever way they thought best. It was always at the beginning of the year that Professor Batzri wondered why he'd taken this job in the first place...later, it got better - much better - but in the beginning it was simply tiresome.
He'd start this year as he had every other, with a short unit on creatures of the Dark. Pulling a clean parchment and freshly inked quill toward him, he wrote:
I. What IS a Dark Creature? Most of the students considered this boring and un-useful. But it was required in the exams, and so Professor Batzri continued to teach it.
II. Red Caps and Pogrebins, he continued. Discuss. He always picked a few basic creatures to begin with - the students generally found it interesting. As he did.
III. More Dark Creatures...a general overview. Next class, he'd assign an essay - this was enough for now.
Blowing on the ink to dry it, Professor Batzri stood, satisfied.
I LOVE it. He and Remus will be two peas in a pod. I can see it now - the disadvantaged though extremely dedicated and intelligent student (not to mention a member of my harem! ) has the greatest of respect for his role model, the professor with a sharp tongue and mind like a steel trap.
And he's complete opposite of Lockhart, even with the book writing thing. Why wouldn't I love him?? I didn't even realize it was you doing the app until I read the bit about you taking that part out of the app - then I was like, "Wait, what are you talking about? You can't edit posts!" So then I checked who it was and had to laugh at myself. ;-)
Very extremely accepted.

Re: Andreas Batzri
Oh. Ho hum. I don't like him all that much myself. We have, let's say, a grudging respect for each other, that's all.
But yay, glad he's accepted.

Re: Andreas Batzri
LOL, a grudging respect? Like, "I'll tolerate you and be over courteous because you're my creator," and "I'll make disgusted faces at you and not terminate you because you're actually a well-done character."
I still love him.
