Best dog ever
A little over two years ago I looked at getting a dog for my wife for her 30th birthday. It took a lot of research but I finally decided that a Chessie would be the best dog for us. Lots of people had there opinions about the breed saying they were to energetic, stubborn, and aggresive, etc.. I didn't listen, I saw those eyes, their beautiful composure and I heard about their absolute devotion to their family.
When "Cooper" came home everything changed. Our lives changed. He was so tiny and required so much care and attention, I remember sleeping next to him at night because he was scared, he would crawl up next to my wife and I and just fall asleep. Over the next 8 months he became my best friend, our best friend. I couldn't wait to get home to see him, he would always greet us with that Chessie smile.
We would go on walks that I never wanted to end, neither did he. If we encountered water, it was over. I'd never get him back, he would just sit in far enough that I couldn't reach him and he'd play. I would have to borrow a ball from someone else walking their dog and then he was back with me, he eventually figured this trick out.
When he started to get older I felt that I needed to get him into something that would allow him to continue learning, he always wanted to please. At 9 months old he would stick next to me off leash while I ran, could do all the normal tricks, sit, stay, roll over, shake a paw, give 10. Now I don't know if this is normal with Chessies but at the parks that we went to he was by far the fastest dog. He was my dog and I was so proud of him.
Yesterday "Cooper" at 10 months old left us, it was very unexpected and we don't know what the cause was. There is one thing I do know though, to all those who had negative opinions about Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, your wrong. They are the best dogs ever. So loyal, funny, smart and energetic (I can't think of any reason why that would be a bad thing). What was only about 8 months felt like years, it still is so sureal that he won't be barking at the door to come in and and then run back down the stairs to get me to play with him.
If you are looking at a Chessie, don't hesitate, there won't be any regrets and I promise you that you'll be getting the best friend you'd ever need.
