Early Morning in the Common Room
Aiden plodded into the common room, still sleepy, and glanced around. No Gwen. Shrugging, he turned and went back into the dorm for a moment to retrieve his whittling.

He sat down before the fire and gazed at the smooth surface of the wood, turning it over in his hands. With a small smile, he took his knife and began to cut off a few long strips from the wood.

Re: Early Morning in the Common Room
Gwen gave a small shriek as she noticed Aiden on the floor in front of the fire. Aiden turned around and grinned at her. "What, a mouse?"

"You startled me," she said. "I didn't think anyone else was crazy enough to be up this early."

Aiden pretended to be hurt, "I'm not crazy..." He grinned as Gwen started to look apologetic. "Well, maybe I am, but don't tell anyone, they haven't caught on yet." He stretched out his back; hunching over in the firelight was making it sore. "So, what are you doing up this early?"

"If they haven't yet, it won't be long before they do," Gwen said, sitting in one of the armchairs.

"I just woke up," she said. "Very finally, if you know what I mean. What about you? And what are you carving?"

"I just felt like getting up, I guess. I could have slept for longer, but I just, you know, didn't. And as for this..." he held up the wood and eyed it critically, "I can't say I'm exactly sure. What do you think it is?"

Re: Early Morning in the Common Room
Gwen slid off the chair and stepped over to peer over Aiden's shoulder at the unusual-looking lump of wood.

"It could be a bird," she said skeptically after a few moments. "Without wings. Or maybe a frog, if you cut away that part -" she gestured accordingly- "to separate the legs. But I think it looks most like...."

"Yes?"

"A block of wood. With a couple of scrapes."

Aiden laughed outright. "Well yes, I would think so. Hope so, really. But I don't think it's an animal this time..." Aiden's thoughts drifted off. Recalling himself, he smiled up at Gwen. "So what are you reading?" he asked, nodding at the book she'd left in the chair.

"I'm reading up on tentaculi and moliopods," she responded. "Or, I would be, if either of them were mentioned in the book. Actually I'm just browsing."

Aiden laughed. "Go back to bed. You're a smart alec this early in the morning."

"At least I brushed my hair," Gwendolyn replied bitingly. It wasn't strictly true - she hadn't brushed it, afraid brushing it would make it friz - but it got her point across.

"I thought it looked interesting," Aiden said mildly. "You were the one telling me I should go for the Yellow Porcupine look last night."

"That's not what I meant. You've got a bit of the James Potter there now. You could at least brush it."

"Well if you care so much, you brush it." He folded his arms and gazed at her bemusedly.

"Then I will."

Gwen jumped up and raced into the dorm again, careful not to disturb any of the others. Grabbing her blue-handled brush she raced out again and arrived, breathless and grinning, by Aiden once more.

"Got it."

"Proceed, General," Aiden said, his face set grimly and his eyes closed tight.

Gwen shoved him and brushed his unruly hair severely back from his forehead. "Like that?"

Aiden gingerly felt his hair, "Yeah, that should be fi -- wait, what on earth did you do??" He got up and dashed to a display case to look at his reflection. Aiden burst out laughing as he admired Gwen's handywork. "Oh, yeah, sure, this will be just great. If I was trying to turn a train down a dirt road." Aiden ran his fingers through his hair, messing it up again. "Care to give it another try?"

Giving a long-suffering sigh, Gwen applied the brush once more - this time with more care.

"There," she said after a few moments. It was brushed much more regularly than the first attempt. "What do you think of that?"

"Much better, thanks." Aiden flopped carelessly into an arm chair. "Ready for class to start?"

"In a manner of speaking," Gwen replied despondently.

"You're not?"

"Not really. I'm glad to be back, and some classes I'm ready to start - but no, as a whole I'm not ready to go back to the half-crazed, stressed-out Gwen we all know and love. You?"

"I can agree with you..." he looked at her mischeivously, "I don't think anyone is ready for you to go back to your crazed and stressed-out self. Though yes, we love you anyway."

Aiden sighed, growing slightly melancholy, "I don't want class to start again either. I'm not glad to be back. But, as you know, I never am. Granddad's always been another year older. And, as sad as it makes me...that's not quite what's bugging me the most right now." Aiden bit his lip. "You've seen the difference, haven't you?"

"What?" Gwen asked, confused. "Difference in your Granddad? I've never met him."

Aiden shook his head, "No! Not Granddad."

He sighed, realizing he'd have to be more straightforward. "You saw how everyone - well, the girls - were acting." Aiden looked into Gwen's face. "I don't like it," he said frankly.

"Oh. That. Um." She wasn't exactly sure what to say, so seh grinned instead. "You mean you don't like having your own personal fan club?"

"No, I don't."

Aiden looked at his hands, "They didn't used to look like this you know. No calluses...rather pale." He pushed up his sleeve, revealing an awfully buff arm with a definate farmer's tan. "Didn't used to look like this either. But Gwen..." he looked at her hopelessly, "I'm still ME. Why can't they still be them? Why can't they keep swooning over Black and Potter and leave me alone?" Aiden scoffed, "At least Black and Potter have experience in warding them off."

"Or they would, if they ever warded the girls off," Gwen amended. "Yeah. I see your problem."

Re: Early Morning in the Common Room
Aiden cleared his throat and stood up. "And it's not going to go away by whining about it." Aiden set his whittling on the shelf again, "I'm going down for breakfast, you coming?"
