First Class of the Year
Tarus Kettleburn arrived at the enclosures where Care of Magical Creatures was usually taught several minutes before his class did. Studiously avoiding looking at the golden sphinx pacing around in one of the pens - they couldn't riddle you if you didn't have eye contact - he waited for the students to arrive.

It was going to be a decidedly interesting lesson.

Enter Rochelle and Carina
Carina made her way across the grounds and toward Professor Kettleburn. As it always was with Care of Magical Creatures, she felt odd without the weight of her cat in her bag, but she figured the best place for Codswallop was not anywhere near something big enough to eat him. As soon as she neared the enclosure, she was very glad she had made that decision.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Rochelle skipped lightly across the grass toward her first class. Being careful not to trip and trying to think about everything all at once is not an easy thing to do, and she found herself veering off course several times. However, when she got close enough the the enclosure and saw Carina she found to much easier to get there quickly.
I wonder what's been happening in Ravenclaw recently.... she thought. Carina was her number one source for gossip.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Carina looked up and saw Rochelle galloping across the grass toward her. Oh no...... she thought. She didn't like sharing her collected info with anybody, but this girl made it impossible not to. I wonder what it will be this time...talking it out of me? Begging it out of me? Annoying it out of me?? She quickly turned away and pretended not to see her.

Narcissa
Narcissa held her books over her head, trying to shelter herself from the light rain. WHY did Care of Magical Creatures have to be outside?

CoMC
Marti and Morgan Louisa walked through the drizzle to the pens where Care of Magical Creatures took place. Marti interestedly watched the sphinx stalking around the inside of the pen.

Aaron
Aaron walked slowly out of the castle and over to the pen. There was something in it, but he couldn't figure out what. when he got close enough to see, he gasped. Wow, a sphinx. Aaron thought. This has got to be better than History of Magic.

Re: Aaron
Bran stalked a few steps behind his sister and cousin, his eyes on his feet, scowling. Drizzle was, if possible, worse than any other weather condition possible. Especially when one was having a class outside.

There was a small class gathering by one of the near enclosures, where a very large animal with wilted golden fur prowled. It was a sphinx, Bran saw with a spark of interest as it turned in their direction. And it seemed to be making the professor excessively edgy, too, as he refused to look at or go near the enclosure at all. Brandon gave a sniff of disdain. Kettleburn was obviously past his prime.

~*~

Lily was early to the enclosures, and she'd even had time to race back to her dormitory and snatch a magically-enhanced umbrella that repelled water within a ten-foot radius. It was pink and quite lacy and had once belonged to a neighbor with a penchant for Victorian heirlooms, until one summer Lily had accidentally grown a lavish bed of roses in the neighbor's yard and been given the umbrella as a thank-you. (She'd also received a warning from the Misuse of Magic Department at the Ministry of Magic - even though it had been an accident - but since she had a perfect record before and after, it wasn't much of a problem).

Now, pleasantly dry, Lily joined the rest of the students and Professor Kettleburn (who was looking decidedly nervous) to wait for the rest of the class.

OOC: I don't want to post separate intros to all of my characters, it'd be redundant, but they're all going to be there unless otherwise noted. They will comment in class and before and after, there just won't be a "so-and-so walked in" post. ;)

Re: Aaron
Kettleburn spied the Head Girl walking toward the pens, a battered lace umbrella bobbing along at her side. He noticed with interest that no water seemed to be falling around her.

"Hello, Miss Evans," he said quietly when she neared him. She looked up and murmured a cordial hello. Kettleburn pointed at the umbrella above her - "Would you mind if I enhanced that charm so that it covered the class?"

"Not at all," Lily replied with a smile. She snatched the parasol out of the air and handed it to the teacher.

Kettleburn muttered a spell - and suddenly, it wasn't raining any longer. Or rather, he corrected, it wasn't raining on him.

It didn't seem to be raining on any of the students, either, which fact was evidenced by the startled looks and puzzled glances. With a smile, Kettleburn let the handle of the parasol go. The lacy umbrella drifted lazily up about ten feet to hang contentedly in the middle of the invisible canopy, while outside it the drizzle continued to fall with a small ping-ing like water on glass.

"Ah," Kettleburn said in satisfaction, "Thank you, Miss Evans."

"You're very welcome," Lily said, retreating to her friends.

Mai and Ali
Mari and Ali raced over the Hogwart's grounds towards where the constantly grwoing group of kids stood. Mari stopped with about 20 yards between her and the rest of the class.

"What's wrong?" Alii asked, stopping beside Mari.

"Why are none of them getting wet?" Mari asked curiously.

"I dunno," Ali responded hurriedly, "but I AM getting wet so lets get over there where it isn't raining!"

The two girls raced towards the rest of their cassmates and the teacher.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Trent slowly stalked out of the Castle and stepped into the rain. He loved the rain. Sunshine was too happy for him. Rain was just right.
As he walked he surveyed the scene before him. Ahhh, he thought to himself. Looks like Kettleburn cast a rain repelling spell. I could counter it, he thought bemusedly. Nah, he said decidedly. I wouldn't want to spend a day like this in detention. Besides, I've got a whole year to work with.
With that last thought he continued the long walk over to the pen where the animal he assumed they'd be working with, was kept.
Aralyn quickly ran her long legs toward the enclosures, which appeared dry. She stood next to Lily Evans, the nice red-headed girl that James Potter was insanely infatuated with.
"Hey Lily."
OOC: Emma you don't mind if I play lily for a minute do you, i am insanely bored!!!!
"Hey, you're that Gryffindor, that was transfered to Egypt...um...Aralyn, right?"
"Yeah. And you are Head Girl, and your greatest fan is James Potter." Aralyn laughed. "Common knowledge. Anyway, what do you think of Professor Herring?"
"We're going to steal a ship. That ship?"
"Commander. We are going to commander that ship. One question about your personal business boy. How far are you willing to go to rescue this girl?"
"I'd die for her."
"Oh good, no worries then."
CoMC
Kenneth trotted across the grass to the Care of Magical Creatures enclosure, glad that History of Magic was finally over. He peered ahead, trying to see what it was they were studying today. A group of students moved, and he saw a golden sphinx pacing the kennel. When he got closer Kenneth guessed it was a female--but it was hard to tell with sphinxes.
As Kenneth joined the rest of his class, he noticed that it suddenly wasn't raining where everyone was standing. Somebody cast a rain repelling charm, he thought, a little regretfully. He liked the rain, especially when it was soft like this. Oh, well.
OOC: I'm doing the same as Emma--I don't feel like bringing in ALL my characters.
Am I correct in assuming that HoM is BEFORE CoMC?
"Hi," Tent said dully back to Narcissa. "Wonder when class will start. Oh, did you see the pathetic spell Kettleburn used to keep us dry? I could counter it with my eyes closed," Trent sneered.
Beginning the Course
OOC: I think the order it kind of fell into in everyone's mind was Potions, HoM, CoMC, Astronomy, just because that's the order they started in.
And no, ILRL, it was ok for you to do Lily a bit.
IC:
"Ah," said Kettleburn shiftily as the students gathered. "Ahem. Since we seem to mostly be all here...we might as well begin." As the new students stepped forward and introduced themselves when called upon, Kettleburn's nervousness grew. Not a few of these seemed to be pranksters - he wasn't entirely sure if he wanted them near a sphinx.
"Welcome to - er - Care of Magical Creatures," he said, and coughed. "That is to say," he said again, more loudly, "Welcome to a new year of Care of Magical Creatures." Some of the older students were beginning to give him odd looks. Ignoring them, he continued, hoping that his voice was growing steadier as he talked.
"Here you will learn to differentiate ordinary creatures from their magical relatives. You will interact with many rare species of creatures, the likes of which most people never see in the course of their lives.
"Some of these animals will be dangerous, or mildly so, and I must stress to you the importance of using common sense. You will come to no harm in this class as long as you obey all instructions to the letter and - er - exercise caution." He cast a sidelong glance at the restless sphinx prowling about its enclosure.
"Today we will be - ah -" he stopped. He couldn't do this. He was not a nervous man, but sphinxes definitely brought out the worst in him...he began to sweat, even in the chill breeze that came with the drizzle. "Today we will -" he stopped again and drew a deep breath, ignoring the titters that had broken out in some of the student groups.
"Today we will be working with and learning about sphinxes," he said finally. "The sphinx is an Egyptian animal from - ah - Egypt." Cursing his own tongue-tied-ness, he forged recklessly on. "Making its lair in shallow caves that afford some protection from the merciless Egyptian sun, the sphinx mostly subsists on small animals such as rats and lizards and - er - other rodents - ah - whatever wanders into its lair. They will not attack humans if a human is intelligent enough to answer the riddle put to it by the sphinx." It was only half true, though. Hadn't he spent six weeks in a sphinx's lair even after he'd correctly answered her riddle? "A sphinx will generally only make contact with a human if eye contact is established between them.
"As you can see," he said, sweating more profusely under his heavy work robes, "We - I - ah - have a - ah - sphinx here today." Another sidelong glance to the tawny beast in the enclosure, then back to the students. "You will be allowed to examine it from outside its pen. Please try to avoid contact with the sphinx. If it does accidentally take notice of you, stay silent unless you're absolutely sure of the riddle's answer. Staying silent should make the sphinx leave you alone." He hoped. Very much. Most sphinxes would leave a person undisturbed if he didn't answer the riddle, but there were a few...
"Please form into groups of two," Kettleburn instructed weakly. "We will proceed slowly to the pen. You are free to make notes on the appearance, movement, and structure of the sphinx - it will all be discussed later. Any questions, please save until we are done examining the beast." He sighed. "When everyone has a partner, we may go."
OOC: If anyone wants to get into a riddle contest with the sphinx, it's their affair. I stink at riddles myself, and as is obvious Kettleburn is trying VERY hard to avoid riddles at all. It's a pretty stupid sphinx, so it wouldn't be hard riddles, but still.
Re: Beginning the Course
James socked Sirius in the arm, "Partners."
He shook his head in Kettleburn's direction, "That sphinx really gives him the creeps, but I say he's being ridiculous. Wonder why he's so jumpy around 'em." James grinned at Remus, who was watching the sphinx closely and taking notes. "Kinda playing with fire there, aren't you Moony, watching it that close? What if it turns and looks at you?" he opened his eyes wide and ogled mockingly at Remus.
~~~

"What do we need to get into partners for, Professor?" Marti asked curiously. She liked Professor Kettleburn in her own way, or she wouldn't have cared enough about the class in general to ask. Aiden nodded, also curious. Chelsea caught his eye and his happiness that he and Gwen had made up was suddenly renewed.

Re: Beginning the Course
"So you're not seeking fair lady Evans again?" Sirius asked mockingly. "Fine then, I'll be partners with you. But don't expect any mercy." He eyed the sphinx with a glint in his eye. "That thing looks interesting. Wonder what'd happen if we stuck Snape in the pen with it?"

~*~

Kettleburn was taken by surprise. He wasn't sure exactly why he'd asked them to form into partners, except that it was something he always did when there was an animal in the pen.

"Buddy system," he said on impulse, intentionally vague. "It's safer that way."

Narcissa/Carmondy arrives
Narcissa wiped the water droplets off of her prefect badge and turned to Trent,
"I suppose we're partners then?"

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Carmondy at last decided to grace everyone with her presence. Her long, golden hair was pulled back in a low ponytail with a few loose strands framing her face. It was clear that she'd obviously been doing her hair this entire time, but a smile played on her lips as she walked up to Kettleburn and smiled sweetly explaining,
"Sorry I'm a bit late, Professor. You see, my owl got out of her cage and was flying around in the great hall trying to figure out why she couldn't fly up into the enchanted ceiling. I tried to catch her but couldn't to I had to get the headmaster to help me. But then she escaped out the window! So we had to go parading around the grounds searching for her when we realized that she'd flown into the Forbidden Forest. Needless to say, I couldn't go in there--it's forbidden. So I had to stand at the edge of the tree's calling for her and hoping she'd hear me. But she still didn't come out! So what was I to do? Well--the headmaster had since left and returned with two brooms. We then had to fly over the forest hoping we'd run into her. And alas (sigh)--wouldn't you know-- it turns out it wasn't even my owl in the first place. Just one that looked exactly like her! Isn't that funny? But i did learn something from all of this. The headmaster sure can fly a broomstick!"

Aiden groaned and shook his head, smiling in spite of himself. Carmondy had always been some sort of compulsive liar, and kind of manipulative into the bargain. But he'd still managed to like her. Go figure.

"All right, Miss Cunnningham," Kettleburn said. He wiped his brow, looking toward the sphinx. He knew it was a completely blatant lie, but he didn't think he had it in him at the moment to punish her.

Rochelle and Carina
Rochelle turned to Carina and gave a little gasp in her epiphany. "Carina! WE could be partners!!!" she smiled as if it was her best idea she had had all day.

OOC: and it is too.
*~*~*~*~*~*
IC:
Carina was still stunned from the blast of conversation that had erupted from Rochelle's mouth moments before. Her last words were still ringing in her ears....."....Oh darn...I guess we sort of missed the instructions didn't we? That's okay! I have the whole text memorized anyways."
Carina rolled her eyes and looked over at Rochelle, who was still smiling, and then at Remus....who did not have a parter!
I think Rochelle and Pettigrew will get along better anyways... she thought as she walked quickly toward Remus.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

A puzzled Rochelle stared after Carina as she muttered a "be right back...." and ran off. She frowned for a second...but then regained her happy face at the sight of a trembling Peter...who looked like he had no idea what to do.
