First Day Back - Gryffindor Common Room
Gryffindor Common Room

Morgan Louisa collapsed in a large, poofy armchair just south of the fire and sighed gustily. Madeleyn Arnoldson, her fellow Gryffindor fourth year and closest conspirator, did the same.

"There were a lot of new Gryffindors this year," Madeleyn remarked as she settled into the comfortable chair.

"And all of them scared stiff by Brandon," Morgan added darkly. "I do wish he'd tone down that glare of his."

Madeleyn laughed a little hestitantly. "Really, Morgan - they're first years, they're nervous anyway -"

"Still," Morgan Louisa persisted, "he really is unmaneagble during the Sorting. I do wish he'd lighten up a little, burn his books, go out in the sun, and smile."

"He smiles at you," Madeleyn retorted.

"Big help," Morgan grumped.

Madeleyn was silent for a moment, sensing her friend's black mood.

"Did you notice that there was a new Hufflepuff this year?" Morgan Louisa asked brightly after a moment. Her gloominess seemed entirely to have dissipated; Madeleyn shrugged it off as one of Morgan's characteristic peculiarities.

"A first year?" Madeleyn asked. "There were tons."

"No, he looked really old - like sixth or seventh," Morgan Louisa replied, "and he was awfully good looking."

Madeleyn considered for a moment. "What did he look like?"

"He was really tall, and really tan. He looked like he'd spent all day outside." Morgan glanced ruefully at her own sheet-pale skin, which - although she spent plenty of time out of doors, unlike her older brother - never seemed to do anything but spot the occasional freckle.

"He had blond hair," she continued after a moment. "He was talking to that girl Brandon hates - Guenever or something, I think."

"Gwen James? She was talking to Aiden Jeffreys," Madeleyn said authoritatively. Her older sister Annette was in the Hufflepuff House, and so she was familiar with its members from the descriptions Annette gave. "He's not new, not at all, though he is a seventh year."

"Are you sure?"

"Quite sure," Madeleyn replied confidently.

"Well, if he's not new, he certainly changed," Morgan Louisa said feelingly, before lapsing into silence again.

Kenneth ducked through the circular entrance to the Gryffindor Common Room. His mind was on some new books up in his dorm, and he hardly noticed the two girls sitting and talking around the fire.

"Hello, Kenneth," Morgan Louisa called brightly as he hurried past.

Kenneth stopped and turned. Spotting the two girls, he grinned apoligetically. "Oh, hi, Morgan! Sorry, I didn't notice you two at first."

He strode over to a seat near the fire and collapsed into it. "How are you? Did you enjoy the feast?"

"It was long," Morgan said. She scowled expressively - "And Brandon was awful, I could see him glowering all night. Honestly, will he never learn to have fun?"

"Oh, give him a break," Kenneth said cheerfully. "He's not all bad. Besides, he smiles at you."

“Ha," Morgan replied mirthlessly. "That's a major part of the problem.

"So," she said brightly after a moment, idly shooting purple sparks out of the tip of her wand - "How did YOU enjoy this year's feast?"

"Oh, it was okay, I guess," Kenneth said, shifting his position on the poufy armchair. "It seemed a little longer than usual, but that's what everyone else is saying.

"Do you think we got more new students this year?" he asked thoughtfully.

"There were a lot," Morgan said. "Or at least, they all took a long time to sort. I dunno," she added carelessly - "After you've been through four Welcoming Feasts, it seems to become old stuff."

"Yeah, you're right," Kenneth answered. "And that's six for me." He paused. I can't believe this is my last year of Hogwarts! I feel old.

"It's your last year?" Morgan asked in surprise. "I had no idea you were so old," she added matter-of-factly. Had she been anyone else she would have blushed; instead, Madeleyn blushed for her.

Kenneth smiled at his friend's frankness. She was always like that with him, and he admired it in her. "Yep, I'm an old guy now. You're still a young'un."

"Fifth year," Morgan retorted. "Not exactly young. Not that much younger than you are, either...so watch it." She grinned.

"Oh, I don't know," Kenneth answered with a wink. "Fifth years are pretty young compared to us seventh years--at least, they act that way." He grinned back at her and swung his long legs over the side of his cushy armchair.

"Watch it," Morgan said without malice. "Not all that long before I'm a seventh-year as well."

"True," Kenneth said. "But then I'll be two years gone." He yawned and looked at his watch. "Sorry to have to leave so soon, but I really need to get to bed--I'm exhausted."

Morgan caught his yawn and looked over at Madelyn. "He's right, you know. We should be turning in soon, too."

"Sounds good," Madelyn repied. "Right after we go to the library and check out those books you wanted."

Morgan snapped her fingers. "That's right, I almost forgot. Let's go."

She jumped up and sped toward the door, with Madelyn following her as best she could.

Kenneth smiled and lifted himself out of his chair. When Madelyn had mentioned the library he'd remembered the books he had up in his room, but he realized he was too tired for that now. Kenneth wondered why he seemed so exhausted all of a sudden. Well, there's always tomorrow, he though sleepily.

He straightened up and plodded off toward the dorms, thinking only of the warm blankets and soft pillows that awaited him.

By the time the Marauders made it to the Common Room, it was deserted entirely; therefore, since it afforded no amusement, they listened to the nagging voice of their mothers in their heads and went dutifully to bed.
