First Day Back - Slytherin Common Room / Girls' Dorms
Slytherin Common Room
Kallias almost purred with relief, after a long train ride and what seemed like an even longer feast he was finally in the common room once more. He smiled wider as he shifted, sauntering almost boredly to a high backed chair which looked rather appetizing at the moment, his form lowered and slumped against it's cushions without a second thought.
"It's good to be back," he murmured tiredly to himself as Mordred sashayed over to leap into his lap. A hand came up absently to stoke the feline before blue eyes drifted to look at the pet, which was now settling his fluffy mass on a robe-clad lap with an actual purr.
"Isn't that right, Mordred? You're happy to be back, too, aren't you?"
Penny dashed into the Slytherin Common Room, passing Kallias without a greeting. She pounded downstairs, taking the steps two at a time.
"Nice to see you, too, Penny!"
Kal chuckled as the older girl sped by, causing his own cat to jump in surprise, leaping off of his lap to chase after the girl's fleeting robe hem.
"Silly cat, you know you're not supposed to go into the Girls Dormitory. It's not fair at all to me, you know."
He tugged himself somewhat lazily from the chair as he laughed to himself, stretching in front of the fire before he turned to survey the room.
Mowse was curled up on the four-poster bed. Seeing Penny coming, the black cat sprang lightly to the floor and twined around her master’s legs, begging for food. Penny grabbed the cat food from the shelf and poured it into Mowse’s dish, feeling guilty that she had forgotten earlier. Then she snatched her book from her suitcase and plopped onto her bed with a contented sigh. I’m so glad to be back at Hogwarts where I belong!! she thought happily.
About three hours later, Penny sat up, yawned, and stretched. I must have fallen asleep while reading. She got out of bed and trudged upstairs to the common room to see what was going on.
No one was there. It was dark except for the flickering light on the walls from the torches and the glowing coals in the fire. Penny checked her watch. It was after twelve! She must have slept longer than she thought.
The problem was now was she wasn't tired. So she slumped into a chair by the fireplace and stared at the coals.
"Are you always up this late, or are you trying to accomplish something?"
Elliot seemed to murmur nonchalantly as he wandered from the boy's dormitory. He might have been recognized as the older boy Kallias had been talking to over the sorting feast, the one who had been humoring his companion with a faint smile and a somewhat mocking tone.
"Or, are you one of those girls who think they're tough?"
He wasn't mocking right now, in fact, he just sounded quiet and inquisitive. His honey eyes flickered in the light as he started to seat himself in one of the stiff-backed chairs.
Penny jumped. She hadn't expected anyone to still be awake at this hour. She looked up and blushed furiously. It was the boy from the feast! "Um, hi. I woke up and couldn't get back to sleep." She was a little irritated at him for what he had said, and it showed in her voice.
"Not too worried about classes tomorrow?"
He didn't look at her as he swung his legs over the arm of the chair. He had never cared for sitting properly, and it wasn't like anyone would tell him not to here. If they tried, well, he might actually get some entertainment from an already boring evening. He didn't seem to care that she sounded irritated, his eyes looking down at his uneven (but clean) fingernails as he waited for a response.
"Oh, wait, you're a seventh year. You have NEWTs, don't you? Mmm, silly me, I'd forgotten about that. I really thought that seventh years didn't really have anything to do at all. Well, besides catch up on classes lost to stupid mistakes in earlier years."
Penny was very annoyed now. She stared into the coals, and tried to make her voice sound cool. "No, actually, I'm not worried. I think I have my own schedule under control, thanks. Not that my classes are any of your business anyway."
Her feelings toward the boy had changed greatly since the feast. Who did he think he was, anyway? She gritted her teeth.
"Just curious." He shrugged once more, kicking his foot gently as he watched the older girl get irritated with obvious boredom.
"So what are you going to do after you get out of this dump?"
Green flames cast eerie shadows over his face as he watched her. He was almost creepy in his movement, his mouth stretching into a yawn before his face resumed it's former, relaxed, countenance.
"You're a seventh year, you should now... that is, if you even mind me asking. If it's not my business to know your classes, then I guess it wouldn't be any of my business to know your plans, either...would it?"
Penny sighed. "I'm not really sure what I want to do. I think it'd be fun to do something in the Ministry of Magic, if I could make it in."
She looked up at the boy sprawled on the chair. He had such startling eyes, and his nose was so cute...but no. This would never do. She would never, ever have a crush on anyone, especially a 6th year!
"Not as hard as you think to get in. Just have to know the right people, say the right things. You're a Slytherin, I'm sure you could get in with no problems at all."
He grinned somewhat, reaching down to stoke the rug that had been placed over the cold stone floor before his face rose toward the vaulted ceiling.
"But I'm sure there are much better things for you to do. What in the Ministry?"
Penny glanced at him, mildly curious. "What kind of things did you have in mind?" She was always open for any ideas.
"The ministry is full of stupid wizards who can't make it anywhere else. But, of course, it never really matters what you do... you don't get anywhere and a majority of the witches and wizards die unknown." He shrugged, shaking his head before yawning once more.
"To be remembered, you need power. You need to accomplish something. Being in the Ministry won't get you that."
Penny inspected her fingernails (not all of them clean), and decided not to answer. After a few moments her cat, who she'd almost forgotten was there, suddenly stirred in her lap. Penny's hand came up to stroke his shiny black ears, and she closed her eyes contentedly, almost forgetting the other boy in the room.
He was watching her, Elliot's eyes flickering as his gaze followed her movements. She was cute enough, but her attitudes were a little too... submissive? No, passive was closer. She wasn't ambitious enough for his tastes.
He looked at the cat in her lap, rolling his eyes at the thought.. people always seemed to like cats. His own pet was more than enough, and even that creature was too feline-ish.
"Sleep good. Hope you like petting your... kitty."
He rose with a stretch, back popping as he let his little innuendo slip out. Not a second glance was given as he moved toward the Boy's Dorm with a shake of his head.
Penny watched him leave through half closed eyes. Kitty, indeed! She snorted. Apparently, for him, looks weren't everything. But still, she was angry with herself for never being able to say the right thing. Ministry of Magic, ha! Now he probably thought her some kind of nerd.
She rose from her chair with a sigh, her cat springing off her lap just in time. Tired and exasperated, Penny plodded off to the girls' dorms.
Slytherin Girls’ Dorm
Penny collapsed onto her bed with a sigh and pulled the covers up to her chin. She wondered what was wrong with her tonight. I guess I'm just really tired, she thought. With further ado Penny fell asleep, her cat curled up at the foot of the bed.
