Firsty Day Back - Hufflepuff Girls' Dorm
Hufflepuff Girls’ Dorm

Hannah closed her dormitory door quietly behind her. She was happy to be away from the loud noises and excitement of the Sorting and Opening Feast. Looking around, she found nothing had changed, and she was glad. As usual, her suitcase was already here, sitting under the window. Her high four-poster bed was against the wall on the right, looking comfy and welcoming. Chester, her large white rat, was curled up on the window sill. Hannah smiled. For the past three years, Laura had been pestering her to keep him in a cage. But he hated it, and Hannah didn't like to see him behind bars. He was very tame. Usually.
His food and water were kept on the windowsill, and that's usually where he slept. Hannah went over to him and softly stroked his ears. Then she searched her suitcase and pulled out a pencil and pad of paper. Sitting cross-legged on the floor, she began to sketch.

Gwendolyn entered the dorm, back from her trip to the owlery with Pandora. Hannah McMillan, she noticed, was already there - seated on the floor with a sketchpad and pencil. Chester lay asleep, nearby, looking sleek and well fed after his summer.

"Hello, Hannah," Gwen said cheerfully. She swept off her hat and threw it on her bed and, taking a hairbrush from the table beside it, began to smooth out the tangles that had formed in her long, loose hair over the course of the day.

Hannah looked up. "Oh, hi Gwen!" She put her pad and paper under the bed and picked up Chester, who was stretching on the windowsill.

She tickled the white rodent's ears and looked up at Gwen, who was fighting with a particularly large tangle. "Could I braid your hair when you're done brushing it?"

Hannah had always admired Gwen's beautiful hair. She had helped her do it up several times over the years, and it had become something she eagerly looked forward to.

"Oh, of course," Gwen replied. Hannah braided particularly beautifully.

"How have you been?" Gwen asked the other girl as she handed the hairbrush over and settled obediently forward.

Hannah gave Gwen's hair a few more strokes with the brush. "I've been doing pretty good...I'm just a little sad that this is everyone's last year! Aiden, Bobby, Rebecca, Sarah...I'm sure going to miss them.

"I'm doing French braids--did you want one or two?"

"Two," Gwen said. "But let's go downstairs, could we? Then I won't feel so antisocial."

Hannah pulled out the few strands of hair she'd already braided. "Yes, let's. It's getting a little stuffy in here." She put Chester in her pocket and stood up.

Gwen jumped to her feet, shaking her hair out of its loose half-braid, and sped out the door with Hannah close on her heels.
