Force Fetch?
Hi there everyone!

Wow! What a site, I was so pumped to find a Chessie page in Canada, and the msg board is awesome! Anyways, I have a quick question for those of you that hunt with your Chessies. We have 2 Chessies, one 17 mth and one 7mth. The 17 mth old has one hunting season under her belt and her natural ability is amazing. I'm going to be hunt testing her and trialing her this year. She fetches on command, is doing double marks and right now we're working on hand casts. She does all this with so much enthusiasm that I have forgone the force fetch other than teaching her hold. But the more I read, the more people seem to force fetch even if the dog fetched reliably. Is this the norm- to force fetch even if it doesn't seem necessary? If anyone has similar experiences it would be wonderful to hear of them. My main fear is that we'll run into fetch problems down the road and I'll have to ff when she's older.

Thanks

Danni

Re: Force Fetch?
Hi Danni,
As a trainer, I recommend you properly force fetch your dog. You may encounter problems later during a test or in a hunting situation.
The force fetch is the most important step to start your dog in retriever training. Skipping steps can lead to problems later.
I suggest you step back and work on the obedience with hold, and then proceed to the ear pinch. However, if this is the first time you FF a dog, I highly suggest you find a trainer that can do this for you. I have met people that have told me they have FF their dogs, and eventually, I hear and see that they have skipped steps during the force fetching stage and they end up rushing the dog to another level.
I would honestly hold off on teaching your dog to handle until your dog is solid on fetch, walking fetch and running to a pile, followed by lining drills.
Hope this advice helps.
