Hello?
Hi there.

I'm sure this isn't really the spot for me but maybe you can answer a few questions.

In Feb we adopted (from the shelter) a 4.5 month old puppy. We were told she is CBR and Border Collie. I'm pretty sure its true.

She's turning out to be a wonderful dog :)

Just curious about a couple things...and wondering if its typical of CBR?

She's itchy. I'm worried she may have food allergies. We don't have bugs cuz none of the other critters are itchy. She did have very dry skin when we first got her. It only took a couple weeks before her coat started to shine (better food I think). She' only had 1 bath from me and I'm pretty sure thats all she's ever had.

She has loose stools. Not the runs, but not firm. Again food allergy maybe?

Also, I haven't been able to find much about grooming a CBR. This dog has a longer coat, w/tight curls in front of her tail, loose waves over the shoulders, and an undercoat.

Anyone ever used a Furminator on a CBR?

Re: Itchy Skin problem
Hi Beth,

I would not say that the problems you are having are "typical" of a CBR.

Normal grooming for a CBR is minimal. Normally, I only bathe with soap when a dog has gotten into something stinky or greasy or to speed the shedding process. Otherwise, an occasional rinse with the hose and a weekly brush with a coarse brush is all that is necessary. When shedding I will use a slicker brush to remove the undercoat...the furminator would do the same thing but I would only use it when they are shedding. Otherwise, the undercoat serves a purpose and should not be removed. I'm not sure how this changes when you mix with border collie?

If your vet doesn't have suggestions I would try things like Omega 3-6-9 supplements, changing to a food with no wheat or corn (most common food allergies), trying a fish based food, maybe even trying regular baths with a soothing shampoo (careful with this one - it could make things worse). You might also investigate seasonal allergies, worms, skin infection, etc?

Hope this helps.

Re: Itchy Skin problem
thanks Veronica

What do you mean by coarse brush?

Ruby has a longer coat than a CBR...wavy over the shoulders curly in front of tail...she does have an under coat...I'm thinking the BC in her wanted to be a silky coat -(kind of golden retrevierish). I've found the slicker doesn't penitrate her top coat put a pin brush works ok.

She's only had one bath pretty sure it was her first. USed an oatmeal shampoo.

Have gone corn free since she's been w/us...now on a lamb and rice. DO use salmon oil as a topper some. Her coat is very pretty, very shiny compared to when we adopted her. Part of that has to do w/loosing her puppy fuzz too.

I figure by the time we get to the bottom of this bag of food we'll know if we need to eliminate more than corn, chicken, beef and soy.....

I've talked w/the vet a little. Since she otherwise appears healthy and the itching isn't too bad he suggested we watch and wait. Worm free, no skin infection...no bugs (Alaska yipee no fleas!)

She does also have soft stools. I recently added C-Biotic as a top dressing and haven't yet seen an outgo to see if its helped.
