Lunch at the Hufflepuff Table
Gwendolyn James went straight from History of Magic to the Great Hall, her stomach rumbling loudly. She hadn't had much breakfast - she'd been too busy laughing with Aiden. Before they'd had their enormous fight, that was, she remembered sourly.
With a sigh, she pulled a sandwich onto her plate and began to eat, not really noticing the food at all. It had been a bad morning. A very bad morning.
Aiden poked his head cautiously into the Great Hall. No sign of what he only half-laughingly refered to as his fan club. He heaved a sigh of relief - he'd tried to sneak awaywhile they were still outside chattering, but you never knew when they'd pop up.
Gwen was already sitting at the table, glowering. Aiden's shoulders slumped slightly - he'd hoped to find her in at least an indifferent mood, that way it would be easier to make up and get it over with. Aiden looked behind him one last time, just to be safe, and walked up to Gwen. She looked up from her plate and eyed him coldly, but said nothing.
"Mind if I sit with you?"

"Aren't you going to sit with your fan club?" The question came out harsher than Gwendolyn had expected - she resisted the urge to clap a hand over her mouth in shame. She never said things like that.

Aiden's expression darkened like a raincloud suddenly covering the sun. "Only if you want me to. I'd rather not, since I'd like to sit down and apologize, but if you so happen to be inclined otherwise...I wouldn't blame you." The cloud moved past the sun - Aiden looked only sad.

Gwen opened her mouth and shut it quickly, before she could say any of the cutting things that were so unlike her...but just on the tip of your tongue.
"Sit down," she said stiffly. "I won't stop you."

Aiden sat and smiled awkwardly - he didn't have a lot of experience with apologizing. "Well..." he sighed. "I sorry I blew up at you this morning. It was completely uncalled for, and I'm just - sorry."

Gwen squeezed her hands together beneath the table and bit her lip, not trusting herself to open her mouth at the moment.
Aiden looked at her expectantly.
"Apology accepted," she said with a wan smile after a very long pause. "But -" she hesitated - "I think I deserve an explanation. Why were you so...er..."
"Angsty?" Aiden asked with an apologetic grin.
"Yeah," Gwen sighed.

Aiden slipped into the seat next to Gwen, his brow furrowed. "I can't say I'm exactly sure." He hesitated, "I care a lot about you Gwen, and always have, and you know that - " Not that you know just how much - "but Potter has always left you alone before, and..." Aiden searched for words, "and when that changed...I didn't react well..." He looked at Gwen, a smile playing on his lips, "You're my friend, not his fangirl."

"But what if James Potter was my friend as well?" Gwen asked, anger surging in her again. "And don't say 'he's not your type'," she added as Aiden opened his mouth to protest. "It's a figurative question."

"I wasn't going to say that. I was going to say that I still wouldn't like it if he treated you like that, but if he was your friend and you let him treat you like that, I would have had to let it go."
"See, the thing is - not that I'm sure, mind you - I wanted to say something to him when he said it." He looked at her shamefacedly, "I couldn't come up with anything to say to him when it happened, and I really wish I would have. And then, I think I was trying to make up for it and then you got all...huffy, kinda. I promise I was only trying to be nice, Gwen, but when it backfired..." Aiden sighed restlessly, "I just let my temper get the best of me." He grinned, "Granddad would give me such a lecture."

Gwen sighed, not looking at Aiden. "I still don't understand it," she said warningly. "But I suppose I can give you another chance. Just watch it, okay? It's unnerving when your notoriously calm friend blows up at you out of the blue one morning. It's not the first time Potter's been obnoxious, and it's certainly not the last - I guess that's why it surprised me." She sighed again.

Aiden put a hand over his heart, "I'll behave, I promise. Instead of yelling at you, I'll tackle him, how's that?" he grinned.
Sobering, he put an arm carefully around Gwen's middle and gave her a little squeeze, "I'm sorry."
"So...since I wasn't exactly an active part of your morning...how'd it go?" he asked, returning complaisantly to his lunch.

OOC: Complacently?

"Don't even ask," Gwen said dryly, "Because you would rather not know. Yours?"

OOC: I looked up complaisantly - it's a word.

Aiden shuddered, "Hanging out with Chelsea and her friends all day? Need you ask? I say we do ourselves a favor and never ever fight again." He shuddered again, "now that we know the alternative."

Skilmer ate his lunch in silence. He wanted to hurry and leave; maybe he'd have enough time to go to Potions and see what he needed to make up.

"Hey, Skilmer," Aiden said, nodding to him. Sure, Skilmer only 13 years to his 17, but Aiden tried not to let things like that stop him from being nice.

Skilmer looked up, slightly startled. "Oh, hi. D'you know if I missed anything important today in Potions? By the time I got there, everything was messing up."

Aiden shrugged, "Not a whole lot. She gave us some notes - they were actually pretty cool, how we got them. A little hard to explain though...anyway, after that we started on a potion, which as you saw, heh, didn't get finished. You should stop by and talk to her about it when you're through eating," he added.

Up to nothing
Linda quietly chose a seat at the far end of the table, away from most everybody else. She glanced around, and sat down. She loaded her plate with whatever everyone else was not eating. She ate silently, wincing at every crunch of those crab legs she was eating. Disgusting. Too bad she had already put them on her plate.
She swallowed with an effort to suppress her gag reflex, and narrowly escaped that churning in her stomach. She looked at everyone else to make sure that they were not watching, and snuck the rest of her food back onto the serving dish. She decided to wait till desert to continue her eating.
She sat silently, watching all the other Hufflepuffs chow down their meals. She glanced at the clock. Desert would be out in about 15 minutes. She heaved a sigh, and scooped small amounts of chicken onto her plate. She started to eat.
This was definitely a lot better then those crab legs. At least in twenty minutes I can go back upstairs without an empty stomach.
