Nail Trimming
I have a 10.5 year old female who has a significant adversion to having her nails trimmed.

This was the result of a bad experience as a pup with an inexperienced vet. She requires sedation once a year for nails. Luckily we are able to keep them short through lots of walks on concrete sidewalks and water rock digging in the summer.

I have gradually, over the last few years been handling her paws a little more but she seems to be able to sense when the trimmers are about to be used.

I am concerned about the sedation and side effects as she gets older

Anyone experience this and have any tips?

Thanks

Your Girls Nails

Have you tried having her fed some of her favorite treats while another person cuts her nails ? Maybe even something like cheese ? my dads dog was aweful to cut his nails and we did that with him and it worked . You may have to go slow but eat time a a nail is cut give lots of praise and treats . Good Luck

That worked for us exactly. A treat and praise per nail. Now we have gotten to a treat after both front feet and a treat after both back feet (they don't seem to be needing a trim as often). He still doesn't like it but he understands "stay" and the bag of rewards is in plain view. He's now 4 1/2 yrs. and can be soooooo motivated by the treat! Good luck.:D
