POTIONS Day 2
Professor Herring sat at her desk, smiling kindly at the various greetings she received from her students. Once she could assure herself everyone was present, seated, and ready to begin, she stood and flicked her wand. Very grossly yellow potion filled all the cauldrons. "If you all will remember - not that I really expect you to after the, ah, excitement we had - the last thing we did was stir in the sulfur."
She took a crate filled with sachels from her desk, "Take one as I go by. In the bag you'll find Swedish Short-Snout dragon’s eggshell. Swedish Short-Snouts have extremely large eggs, although they are not particularly big as adults." Herring grinned, "Not big in relation to other sorts of dragons anyway." She continued, moving on to the other students, "Also in the bag there are three small white objects - hen's teeth. You'll need to grind up all of these to powder and stir them into the potion."

OOC: We aren't in partners, right? And what are we supposed to be grinding the stuff with?
IC:
Kenneth took a bag as the Professor went by. He carefully poured out the contents and began to grind them boredly, looking around the room as he did. He noticed absently that Chelsea wasn't in class. He still felt a little sorry for her about yesterday. Oh well.
Carmondy arrives---late
Carmondy came prancing into the classroom, a slightly ruffled look on her face. Opening her mouth to no doubt explain with some elaborate excuse why she was late, she suddenly changed her mind and said simply, "Sorry I'm late, Professor Herring. Family emergency."
And I'm Chelsea Tompkins......though Narcissa sarcastically.
Alvin pushed up his thick rimmed glasses, and added the new ingredients to his cauldron. How exciting! He just loved making potions.....
Trent
Trent , seeing Carmondy come in late, quickly scribbled a note to Narcissa who was sitting in a seat next to him.
So, after Tomkins gets her "surprise", you will help with with Carmondy right?
He quickly, and unnoticeably, tossed it over to Narcissa.
******
Lizzie quietly sat in the back of the room. She giggled silently to herself when Carmondy used her "family emergency" excuse. I will never understand that girl. She silently thought.

Rose
When Prof. Herring came to Rose with the pile of bags, she took one off the top, glanced in it quickly, and started grinding the ingredients with a mortar and pestle. bookworm

Morgan
Morgan slid into a chair at Lizzie's table.
"How can she have a family emergency if her family's a hundred miles away?" she asked under her breath, hiding a grin. "She's getting better, though. It took only about ten seconds, as opposed to sixty."
Re: Morgan
Aaron smiled to himself. He liked Carmondy, but he couldn't see what she got from these excuses. Of course, thats what all his friends said about some of the things he did.
Lizzie
Lizzie shrugged, "Who knows, but at least her excuses are getting abit more believeable. I just wonder when she'll ever stop using them permenantly."

Rose
Rose smiled. Carmondy seemed to have learned to avoid detention with this teacher. She wondered what she had done, Carmondy hadn't told her anything about it.

Morgan
"If she did," Morgan replied, busily grinding, "I'm sure the moon would fall out of the sky for shock. I've never known an excuse-less Carmondy."

Re: Morgan
OOC: No, you're not in partners. It was too much trouble last time. And as for the grinding, I'm taking for granted that the things you would need to grind stuff are a basic potion-making tools.
IC:
Professor Herring silently considered Carmondy's excuse. "I'll ask you to stay after class a few minutes, Carmondy, so I can speak with you." Herring sighed inwardly. She's going to make me lecture her on how hard it is to believe her after she was dishonest before. Bleck.
Once Herring passed out the bags, she returned to the front of the class. "Once the egg shell and teeth are nice and powdery, stir them into your potion with a cedar spoon - which I'd like you to come get once you've finished grinding. The potion will be gritty and getting thicker. Keep stirring until the it is the consistency of peanut butter and blue-grey."

Carmondy
Carmondy smiled at Professor Herring and shrugged. She'd actually been telling the truth this time. She'd slightly exaggerated it of course, but it had been true.
Tossing her hair behind her shoulder Carmondy pranced to the back of the classroom and took a seat next to Rose, flashing Morgan a greeting grin.
OCC: bookworm, Carmondy told Rose a/b her little "family emergency" in the great hall somewhere.

Narcissa quickly read Trent's note and scribbled a reply:
Sure. Just so long as no one knows I was involved. I have a reputation you know.

Alvin's smiled approvingly at his potion. It was turning out quite nice.

detention
OOC: it was detention that Rose was thinking about, not the family emergency. Read a little more carefully.
IC: Rose smiled as Carmondy came over to her. Now she could ask.
"Why such a...well......short excuse? was the last detention really horrible or somthing?" bookworm
ohhhhhh/Carmondy
OCC: OHHHHH, right. I wasn't sure what you meant.
Carmondy shrugged, with a sly grin on her face and replied, "It was....profitable. Not bad."
She innocently twisted a strand of her hair and shook her head as though she could hardly believe what she'd done.
"It wasn't an excuse. There really WAS a family emergency. Actually, I had to send a late owl to Grandmother CONCERNING the emergency."

Checking on her kiddies
Professor Herring threaded her way between desks, peeking into cauldrons and hoping hard they wouldn't have any sort of catostrophic incident today. She paused at Lizzie's, "You didn't grind the teeth enough." She pulled a small vial from the inside of her robes - "Infusion of ius root -" and poured a few drops from it into the cauldron. It started bubbling more enthusiastically rather than the thick, sluggish plop. "Finish stirring and it should be alright."

Rose
Rose, who had slacked off while talking to Carmondy, hurriedly began to follow the directions that Professor Herring had given them, she didn't want to be behind if Professor Herring came to her cauldron. Consequently, she knocked over her Mortar and Pestle, and her powdered hens teeth and (whatever it was...?) spilled out over the floor.
"Oh no!" she said. "Could somebody...?" she was cut short by seeing a dust pan and broom glide over, sweep up the mess and set it where it had been before. Rose looked around. She saw nobody with their wand out, who would have done it?
Gilderoy
Gilderoy, who was sitting in the back corner, was having trouble. He had added the ingredients to his potion and was stirring it vigorously, but when he lifted his spoon out of the potion he saw that it had several large holes in it--as if the potion was eating away at the wood! He wasn't sure what to do, but he didn't want to lower himself to raising his hand.
Carmondy
"That was odd," said Carmondy, referring to the magical broom and dust pan trick, "Rose, you didn't do that did you? Weird. I've been in the magical world for five years now, and it still amazes me."
