James rolled onto his stomach to look at Sirius. "So, tell us, Padfoot, are you still going to abandon poor Marti to her friendless, excitement-less doom?"

Sirius glared at James. "Abandon? I never said I would abandon her, Mr. Prongs," he replied loftily. "I, Sirius Black, give up on a poor friendless soul like Martin? Not a bit of it.
"Although," he added, switching to a martyred tone - "It is a cold and cruel thing you ask of me. That girl is stiff as stone and cold as an iceberg. Obviously she has her priorities wrong - that's proved by yesterday's incident."
"You sound sore, Padfoot," Remus remarked without looking up from his Transfiguration text. "A little rubbed about your first rejection, are you?"
"Not at all!" Sirius looked offended. "And I wouldn't count that as a rejection, either. Merely a...a manifestation of how lonely and misguied Martin is."
Peter sniggered.

James grinned at Wormtail and turned back to Sirius, "Well...if you're quite determined now...what do you say we raise the stakes a little here? A bet, rather than a dare?"

Sirius groaned. "Really romantic date, that," he said in disgust. "'Hello, Marti, how would you like to go study together?' Yeah, I'm sure that one's likely to get her."
"Probably," Peter said seriously. "After all, she's Martin."
"You have a point," Sirius said defeatedly. "And that's what makes it all the worse."
