Character Basics

Full name: Tarus Kettleburn

Answers to: Tarus (from some of the staff) or Professor Kettleburn (from all of the students!)

Nationality: British

Age and Birthday: 36, 20 March

Wand: 11.4”, rowan, unicorn hair

History:

Tarus Kettleburn was born the third of six children in a small house in Bath. Both of his parents were pureblood wizards, and all of the children except Tarus’s older sister Amelia exhibited magical properties at an early age. (Amelia grew up to be a chef in an Italian resturant.) As expected, Tarus received a Hogwarts letter at age eleven and spent the next seven years of his life studying magic.

After graduation from Hogwarts Kettleburn, who had a penchant for any sort of magical creatures, went on a three-year study abroad to work with dragons, gryphons and hippogriffs. While in Egypt he made the acquaintance of a renegade sphinx who – even after he’d answered her riddle correctly – kept him in her lair for six weeks before deciding to let him go. Since then, Tarus has tried to steer clear of sphinxes.

Kettleburn returned home to find a letter from the Magical Educators Academy, London, and promptly enrolled and got a five-year degree in teaching Care of Magical Creatures. Shortly after his graduation from MEA he was offered the position of Care of Magical Creatures teacher at Hogwarts, which post he gladly accepted and has been teaching there ever since.

Important Teacher Questions

Please choose from these what you would like to teach:

Care of Magical Creatures

How long have you worked at Hogwarts? Do you have any prior work experience? He’s been at Hogwarts for nearly ten years, prior to which he did a good deal of research and studied at MEA-L.

In three words or less, tell us your teaching style. Firm, interesting, good-natured

Would you like to be a Head of House? If so, which house? Er, sure – Ravenclaw.

Family

Parents: Althea and Herbert Kettleburn

Siblings: Amelia (39; married; squib), Catalina (34; married), Dillon (30; unmarried), Andrew (26; engaged) and Brittany (19 – she was a surprise!)

Appearence

Skin: Tanned from lengthy exposure to the sun.

Hair: Thick, dust-brown, short

Eyes: Dust-brown with unobtrusive eyelashes and slightly bushy dark eyebrows.

Face: Unremarkable.

Height: Tall – about 6’2.5”.

Body Type: Sleight

How do you dress? Casually, generally in serviceable work robes and protective hand gear.

How do you present yourself? Self assured but not cocky. Kind and intelligent, but also very firm and sometimes aggressive.

Personality
Please be very specific. We want to know everything you can tell us, so put a lot of thought into it!

Kettleburn is a firm and no-nonsense teacher, but also kind and understanding to his students. To other adults, Kettleburn is also firm and fairly talkative, sometimes to the point of aggressiveness. While generally people view him as a nice, caring man he tends to pursue arguments until they’re more than dead to prove a point.

What makes you sad? What are you like when you are sad? When sad, Tarus tends to draw into himself and become snappish and irritable.

What makes you angry? What are you like when you are angry? Tarus enjoys being “right” and can get angry when he feels that his opinions are being attacked. When angry, he is usually very argumentative. His students can tell when he’s angry – he usually assigns extra homework.

What makes you happy? What are you like when you are happy? Tarus is generally happy (aren’t most people?). When happy, he has more patience and can talk about magical creatures for hours.

Are you outgoing, shy, somewhere between? Not shy, but not “outgoing” either. Tarus is fairly self-assured and others are drawn to his calm feeling of solidity.

Do you make friends easily? While he doesn’t generally put himself out, Tarus gets along easily with others and they usually like him.

How smart are you? Intelligent, but not brilliant except in his chosen field.

How important is it to you to follow the rules? While Kettleburn respects the rules and expects his students to follow him, he will wink at a rule-breaking once in a while (for a good cause).

Likes/Dislikes

What are your hobbies or interests? What do you do in your free time? Tarus enjoys researching whatever creature he is at the moment interested in.

What kind of people do you like to be around? What are the kinds of people you can't stand? He gets along easily with most people, although he is irritated by the sort of person who is always attacking others’ opinions.

Strengths/Weaknesses

Subjects? Care of Magical Creatures, as well as curative charms (they come in handy in his field as well).

Talents? Knowing what to do in an emergency situation; Care of Magical Creatures. ;)

Personality Flaws? A bit hot-tempered at times, argumentative past the point of usefulness.

Writing Sample

Tarus Kettleburn surveyed his office proudly. It had become more familiar to him than his summer house – after ten years any place began to feel like home. He had added enough personal touches to this office over the years that it was a good deal less austere than his summer house, too, of which he was the slightest bit afraid.

With a glad sigh Kettleburn took a seat at the mahogany desk and pulled a clean piece of yellow parchment toward him. Dipping a quill into the inkpot, he let three drops of ink fall onto the parchment before writing –

I. Introductions.

It was always best to begin a new class this way, he’d learned through experience. That way you could pick out the troublemakers, the teachers pets, the studious ones who kept to themselves but got top scores on everything.

II. Overview of the course.

Every year there were the students who couldn’t tell a unicorn from a farm horse. One year he’d begun the class by proclaiming that “if it glows, it’s magic”, only to be exceedingly embarrased the next week when a student brought in a jar of fireflies to prove him wrong.

III. Background information on the sphinx.

He’d been avoiding teaching anything about sphinxes since he first accepted the post at Hogwarts, but Dumbledore had finally come out and point-blank ordered him to familiarize the students with the Egyptian riddler. Kettleburn didn’t look forward to it, as he’d most likely have to import a sphinx and display it to the students. Moreover, it had to be a stupid sphinx, so that if it asked any riddles of the students even the slowest one would be able to reply. If a student was attacked in his class it’d be tricky to explain to the child’s parents – even if it was really Dumbledore’s fault.

IV. Display sphinx.

The stupider the better.

That was enough to begin with, Kettleburn decided with a sigh. That was definitely enough to begin with.
