Re: First Class of the Year
"Really? What kind of pet do you have?" Chris asked. He kind of felt weird taking to her, especially since she had a few friends standing right next to her.
Carmondy
"An adorable tawny owl. She likes me of course--she's like my baby. But that's about all."
Carmondy twisted a strand of her silky blonde hair between her fingers and gave the ever slightest flutter of her lashes.
Re: Carmondy
"That's neat," Chris said a bit tentatively. "I've got a cat, Spitzler. He's really nice." Chris looked around and saw that everyone was following the professor away from the pen.
"We should probably follow the professor now," Chris said.

Kettleburn cleared his throat once they were back to the enclosure.
"If you are all ready," he said unsteadily, "Please prepare to take notes."

Aiden pulled out his parchment and quill, and a textbook to write on. But his mind wandered to the free afternoon he would have after class ended - Astronomy wasn't until late tonight. Wonder what Gwen will be up to...
OOC: Emma, Arwen, I need to talk to you two about some coordinated roleplaying. Go peek in the OOC chatter forum.

Marti dragged out something to write on and a writing utensil. Sometimes this class is simply intolerable. As if I don't already know most things about sphinxes.

Re: Narcissa
Morgan pulled out a notepad full of sheets of pink parchment, as well as a green quill and a jar of purple ink.
It wasn't only her clothes that marked her as "interesting".
~*~
Kettleburn cleared his throat once all - or at least most - of the students were ready to take notes.
"The sphinx," he began, making sure that he was out of eyeshot of the real sphinx sleeping in its enclosure - the sight of it made him nervous - "Is an animal native to Egypt." He paused as some of the class scribbled this down (the rest just looked bored).
"Related to the lion, the sphinx is a magical beast with the head of a human female. As we have discussed, the shape of the face and its features denote the gender of a sphinx - they might look it, but some of them are male.
"Sphinxes are highly intelligent creatures and may even use human speech, albeit not very intelligently. Most speak only in riddles, and are incapable of conversation beyond that. Not to say many wizards haven't tried to domesticate them as conversationalists.
"Although the sphinx isn't the most aggressive of creatures, it can be very dangerous when crossed the wrong way. Like dragons and other magical beasts of high intelligence, sphinxes are inordinately fond of treasure and - also like dragons - are very useful to wizards in guarding treasure. Sphinxes may become very aggressive when an unauthorized person attempts to get at their hoard - in that case, not even a correctly answered riddle can save a wizard most times.
"In the wild, sphinxes will collect gold and other precious substances and store them in their lairs - cool, dry caves out of the desert sun. Solitary creatures, sphinxes usually mate only once, if ever, in their lifetime. They abandon their young as soon as the young have a chance of surviving on their own, and the parents go back to their solitary caves. Thus, the sphinx isn't near extinction, but most of their kind manage to lead completely lonely lives anyhow.
"Any questions?"

Notes
Ginger gazed back at the sphinx. It stirred a little in the rain, almost opening its eyes in her direction. Ginger quickly looked away.
"I still like Spanish Green Dragons better," she whispered to Skilmer, as they had been discussing sphinxes and Spanish Green Dragons on the way up. Skilmer smiled wanly and returned to his notes. A moment later though, he replied, "Even though dragons kill?"
"So do sphinxes," Ginger answered. "But I'm not sure of the statistics. Shall we ask?"
Narcissa looked up from her notes and asked,
"Does each Sphinx have a certain favorite subject that they like to riddle on?"

James glanced at Marti as she took notes with a sour expression and returned to the tic-tac-toe game he and Sirius were playing in the margin of Moony's notes. It was largely to annoy Remus, but it didn't seem to be working. All the same, James scowled at the game Sirius had just one and put an X in the middle square.

Rosalee
Rose had carefully and neatly written down the things the Prof. had tole them. Unlike their last class, History of magic, this Class didn't put her to sleep, and , of course, Carmondy was too buisy w/Chris to pass any notes. bookworm

OOC: Yes, Bookworm, it is.
IC:
"Er," Kettleburn replied. "I don't believe the sphinxes are particular about the subjects of their riddles. Most have a wide repetoire of puzzles, although a few of the dimmer ones use only one or two over and over." He nodded toward the animal in the enclosure - "Ours is rather one of the dimmer ones - if its owner was correct, it knows only three to date.
"And, Miss Jengibre -" Kettleburn said as he overheard Ginger's quiet question- "Dragons are much more violent than sphinxes and have caused many more injuries and deaths. While dragons are naturally aggressive and will attack with little or no provocation, a sphinx attacks mostly only in self-defense or guard of its treasure."
Carina
Carina, no longer occupied by the tic-tac-toe game on Remus's paper, was soaking up all this information like a sponge. "Are there different breeds of Sphinxes? Or colors or something?..."
~*~*~*~*~*~**~*~*~*~
Rochelle looked up at the sound of Carina's question. I know this one... she said to herself smiling.

"Er," said Kettleburn, conscious of the fact that he was saying that much more than usual this lesson - "No. Sphinxes may vary some in appearance, but as they are found exclusively in Egypt, there is only one breed. The shade of the fur can vary, but it's always tawny and golden."

wow she actually cares enough to ask a question!
Marti raised her hand, "Is their coloring for a specific reason, such as camouflage?"

Re: Carina
Kettleburn allowed himself a small laugh.
"I suppose you might say that, Miss Martin," he said. "As sphinxes naturally live in desert areas, or areas bordering on a desert, their golden fur does, I suppose, give them ample camouflage.
"Although," he added, "A sphinx is not the sort of creature to run away from any threat. Although not a generally offensive creature, it will keep its dignity by facing down an attacker."

Marti nodded slightly and wrote Has camouflage, though unnecessary in her notes. She sighed and leaned back in the grass. BORing....

Remus gathered up his quill, preparing to write down everything Kettleburn had said thus far. Looking down he saw Padfoot and Prongs' diligent work on his notes and scowled.
"Buzz off," he whispered. "Go play on your own notes, why don't you?"
"We weren't bothering you before," Sirius said with the air of one delivering an unshakeable argument.
"I need - my - room!" Remus replied, attempting to shove Sirius' elbow off of his parchment. Finally, he gave in and laughed.
"Fine," he whispered. "Take that piece. But give me the next one."
Grinning broadly, Sirius handed Remus the next sheet of parchment.
