Chelsea and Aiden...
Aiden carefully added the spider venom to their cauldron while Chelsea stirred vigorously. Chelsea kept stirring, peering into the cauldron to see if their potion had turned scarlet. She frowned and stirred harder. Looking in again, she looked up innocently at Aiden.

"The potion turned yellow instead of red. What did you do to it?"

Narcissa
Narcissa smiled, satisfied at the scarlet red liquid in front of her and Trent.
"Not bad," she said, "looks like we're the first one's to get this right."
She gave a triumphant grin in Aiden adn Chelsea's direction.

Re: Why?
"Of course we did," Trent said as if it were impossible for anything else to have happened.

Gwen & Severus
"Potions is all right," Gwen said reluctantly, stirring the unicorn water. "Just...hard."

~*~

Severus dropped in the venom as Herring instructed, suppressing a self-satisfied smirk as the liquid turned blood-red.

Suppressing the smirk became harder when Herring smiled at him approvingly.

Unicorn Water
Herring raised her eyebrows.

"I wouldn't have expected you to ask that, Carmondy," she replied, looking impish. "But since I've decided I like you I'll tell you - not to mention ten-to-one you aren't the only person wondering. Everyone write this down," she called, "I didn't think to put it on the notes.

"Unicorn water is simply essence of unicorn in liquid form. It's any part of a unicorn such as hair or hoof - which is basically toenail - boiled in lemon juice."

OOC: I can't post any more of the lecture right now because I'm not at home (she's at MY house! -:lol Emma :lol ), but I have the stuff at home all ready and will post it ASAP.

Carmondy
Carmondy once again raised her hand in the air,
"And where do you get this unciorn water from?"
She flashed an I'll-explain-later grin in Morgan and Rosalee's directions.

Rose
Rose was confused. What did Car want with Unicorn water? Carmondy's glance in her direction did little to explain. To distract herself, she turned to her partner, who was in charge of adding the ingredients while she stirred. she glanced at their potion. It looked a sotr of brownish-brick red. Well, at least it wasn't as bad as the pair next to them, who's potion was a bright yellow.

Morgan
Morgan grinned triumphantly as their potion turned scarlet. It was always nice, working with Marti.

Catching Carmondy's conspiratory look, she winked back. As logn as she could keep out of detention, Carmondy was a highly interesting person to know.

Carmondy
Carmondy frowned at the Calderon in front of her and turned to Aaron,
"Why is it purple?"

Re: Carmondy
Aralyn partnered up with *unknown* and set off to work. Soon their potion was a pretty scarlet color.

"Commander. We are going to commander that ship. One question about your personal business boy. How far are you willing to go to rescue this girl?"
"I'd die for her."
"Oh good, no worries then."

Herring
Professor Herring glanced around the room. "Let's see...you two only put two drops of venom in yours, that's why it's yellow. Add another, and then do the 3 drops of unicorn water," she instructed Aiden and Chelsea. (Aiden avoided looking at Chelsea - he would have scowled at her if he did. She had kept distracting him.)

"Now Carmondy and..." Herring looked at the first year boy questioningly.

"Aaron."

She smiled, "Yes. Aaron. You two have an extra drop of venom," she shook her head. "Add another drop of unicorn water - which, Carmondy, you can get at just about any potion supply store, but generally only in small quantities." Herring carefully ignored the conspiratorial grin exchanged between the three girls. It was best not to know. "Your potion won't be as good with the extra bit. You'll have some spelling errors maybe, or sloppier writing on your notes. But it's better than boiling green goo that would result in you continuing the potion as it is."

Herring walked on to the next group and looked at their brick colored potion. "You didn't stir with the rosemary for the full three minutes. It'll still work alright, but will smell strongly of sulfur by the end." She wrinkled her nose.

Cecelia returned to the front of the class, "I hope everyone sees why it is so extremely important to follow directions very carefully. And also how important it is to make sure I know if your potion isn't right." She glanced at Carmondy, "We might have ended up with huge blisters with green fluid that last a full month before they stop throbbing, literally - they shrink and grow, you can actually watch them pulsate. Kinda entertaining if you're not squeamish."

"Now then, if everyone has added the 3 drops of venom, with the potion red, AND THEN the 3 drops of unicorn water, when the potion turns silvery white, I'll continue." She watched with satisfaction as each cauldron reflected slightly different shades of silver-white.

"Well done," she smiled. "Now, return the venom to the case - but keep the unicorn water at your desk for now - and while you're up there, get a scoop of sulfur from this," she help up a wooden box and indicated the stack of scoops. "Then measure 3 teaspoons into the potion and return the excess to the box and put the scoop back. Once you've mixed in the sulfur, it should turn a really sickly shade of yellow, and become rather thicker in consistency."

Herring spooned three teaspoons of sulfur into Severus' cauldron and watched, beaming, as he painstakingly stirred it until it was a downright yucky shade of yellow.

Re: Morgan
"Er," Gwen said as she dropped the sulfur into the cauldron. "Look - it's still red, nothing's happened." She chewed her hair nervously, turning to her partner. "What's wrong?"

~*~

Severus let the smirk show as his potion bubbled thickly. "Good job," Herring said softly before walking around the dungeon classroom again.

~*~

"You do the sulfur," Morgan said, shoving the measuring spoon into Brandon's hand. "I won't take my chances."

Bran grunted and painstakingly measured the appropriate amount of sulfur into the cauldron. After a moment the potion turned orange before fading into a pale tangerine and - finally - remaining sickly yellow.

"Disgusting," Morgan said happily.

Bran said nothing.

~*~

"Would you like to do the sulfur," Thomas asked Rosalee, "Or should I?"

Gross steam
Herring walked over to Gwendolyn and Chris and looked curiously at their cauldron, "You put the right amounts of water and venom?"

Gwendolyn nodded anxiously, "I'm sure I did."

"In that case you didn't measure the sulfur right." Herring winced, "It's going to smell dreadful - " As she spoke the potion made a sizzling sound; the steam turned bubble-gum pink and stank of armpit and rotten eggs. There was a chorus of "Eeeeeeewwwww!!!!!"s from the class.

Herring shuddered and held her nose as she pulled out her wand and waved it in the air over the cauldron. The steam quivered and hung in the air. She pointed her wand at one of the high, tiny windows with a sweeping motion - the steam quivered again and billowed in that direction. Herring coughed and waved her hand in front of her face, "The smell will go away in a few minutes, there's nothing we can do about it in the meantime."

She went to the huge bookcase full of potion ingredients behind her and found a small sachel labled HIPPOGRIFF DOWN and strode back to Chris and Gwendolyn. She took a pinch of tiny, soft feathers from the bag and sprinkled it into their potion. "Stir those in, 13 times counter-clockwise." She lingered a moment to be sure they were on the right track and continued down the aisle to check on the other potions with a sigh. This is tough work! She cast a proud glance behind her at Severus, At least there's one student I don't have to worry about.

Re: Gross steam
Aaron carefully stirred in the ingredients as Carmondy put them in. It was starting to look a little better, but he could tell that his best subject was definitely not potions.

Re: Carmondy
Skilmer tentatively opened the classroom door. "Uh, excuse me, Professor...?"

"Herring. Professor Herring. And you are late because...?"

"I had to go to the hospital wing. My leg." he explained, throwing a glance in Ginger's direction. She was working with Loral over a cauldron, but she looked pleased that she had been able to convince him to have the nurse see to his leg, if not his scratches and cuts. "I'm Skilmer. Do I need to get in a group with somebody...?" He glanced again at Ginger and Loral, wondering if the advantages outweighed the disadvantages.

Skilmer's leg?
Herring's irritated expression disappeared into one of concern, though (slightly) skeptical. "What happened to your leg?

Carmondy/ Narcissa
Carmondy smiled at Aaron,
"Nice work! It looks almost normal now!"
She twittled her fingers at the boy who'd just entered. This was the second person today who'd actually been later then her!

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Narcissa fixed the boy that had just enter with a dissaproving stare. It was her duty as a prefect to let them know when they'd messed up, and she truely enjoyed it.

Rose glanced around the classroom. She was relieved to see that her and tom's potion was the same color as everyone elses, or at least pretty close.;) bookworm;)

Re: Carmondy
Tonks was sitting in a corner, yet agian sleeping. She jerked awake when her partner, Peter Pettigrew (OOC: He doesn't have a partner does he??) tried to measure the sulfur over the cauldron, accidentally dumping the whole bottle in. The potion started the shudder, turn white, then blue, and then it rapidly bubbled over the top, scortching her hair. She jumped up, and started to panic, casting random spells at her cauldron, creating quite a commotion. "Professor Herring, help me!!!!"

Narcissa
Narcissa immediately jumped up and raced over to the foolish Tonks. She whipped out her wand.
"Frelabaretus!" She shouted. The quickly overflowing cauldron froze in mid-boil.
